Setting our international sights

SydneyTalent aims to work closely with every graduate student to ensure their University to employment transition is seamless.  With almost 1500 International students registered with SydneyTalent in 2009 from over 16 countries, they have already proven that they are highly competitive and willing to embrace the opportunities at the University of Sydney.

International students are an important part of the Australian education and employment landscape as we respond to the growth and needs of a global marketplace.

Employing international students while they are studying also gives business a distinct advantage in the growing global skills shortage.  Both Australian companies with a global footprint and international companies with an Australian based office are attracted to employing high calibre talent to their global workforce.  This way, they have the option to easily move employees around their international offices as required.

Global healthcare provider McKesson Asia Pacific employed an international post graduate student Jeff Glushakow through SydneyTalent in mid 2009 and has since transitioned him into a full-time role within the company.

“Jeff started in July 2009 and was recruited as an analyst to perform desktop research. McKesson is currently exploring opportunities in Asia and recruited Jeff to support this expansion,” said Marc Miller, Director Corporate Development & Strategy, McKesson Australia.

“We selected Jeff as he has a Masters of International Business and is fluent in Mandarin, two key skills required for the position. Jeff plays an important role in the analysis and planning of the expansion, and has the ability to work autonomously with little supervision is an important trait. This is exactly the type of individual required in our organisation.”

“I think SydneyTalent is a great idea, it’s a good business model and the concept should work, especially now that the Australian market is accelerating and the competition for capable graduates increases. If you can access potential graduates sooner rather than later, then you can get the pick of the crop. If the situation warranted it, then we would use SydneyTalent again,” added Mr Miller.
