Hello

With various market factors changing and impacting organisations, having the right people at the right time can make a significant difference to an organisation’s performance and competitiveness in both the present and future. Never was this more so than in the climate we see emerging post GFC.
Last month’s Australian Industry Group/Deloitte CEO survey, Industry in Recovery Mode in 2010 underlined Australia’s economic recuperation. It suggested that growth in the manufacturing, construction and services sectors, representing 90 per cent of our economy, is set to be solid in the coming 12 months. This forecast is likely to flow well beyond these sectors and have ripple effects into other industries. If Australia’s recovery continues at this pace, the demand for skilled workers will grow faster than supply.
In addition to the resurrected skills shortage, we see changing social and organisational perceptions impacting work attrition rates. It is no wonder that many organisations have made a priority of workforce innovation to attract and acquire the best talent.
As an innovator in the marketplace for high calibre early career candidates, SydneyTalent takes a position at the forefront of change. We offer talent advantage for our business partners through early access to exceptional University of Sydney pre-graduates, graduating and post-graduate students. By working with business partners who demonstrate a strong commitment to innovative talent acquisition, our model allows them early access to a broad and yet specialised talent pool.
We consistantly receive feedback from our clients about the calibre of the student employees placed with them.
“The quality of people we have placed from SydneyTalent has been exceptional; there’s no other word for it, and as you know we run a pretty rigorous assessment centre.” Andrew Le Lievre, Recruitment Manager, Microsoft Australia and New Zealand.
More and more we see organisations seeking to integrate student employees into their workforce by tapping into SydneyTalent’s offer.
We always welcomes your feedback, ideas and suggestions. I invite you to send your thoughts via sydneytalent.communications@sydney.edu.au

Aaron Williams - Director, Business Development
In February this year, Aaron Williams joined SydneyTalent as Director, Business Development. With the continual growth and demand for SydneyTalent’s unique offer, Aaron will manage new business demands and harness new business initiatives in 2010.
What attracted you to this role with SydneyTalent?
I was drawn to the excitement of an innovative business like SydneyTalent because it represents a new era of thinking in recruitment. The finely tuned model that integrates industry benchmarked learning and development programs, is unmatched and has received unanimous recognition from business and government.
What does the Business Development side of SydneyTalent encompass?
Our role is to introduce talented students from across the University of Sydney to industry and to support industry with their talent acquisition goals. There is a need to stay across emerging trends. Graduate talent has been a consistent theme for a long time and will be for the future. Where this is directed and how it is utilised is the X factor.
How does SydneyTalent differentiate itself from HR firms?
SydneyTalent has an intimate knowledge of the student population working as part of the University of Sydney. As a consequence, the connectivity and insight around pre-graduate and post-graduate talent is clearer and a real competitive advantage. We are shepherding organisations inside the gate of the University rather than their current position of trying to entice targeted graduates from outside the gate. This early access model, which encourages companies to employ undergraduates in course related roles using a fully serviced contract recruitment offering, echoes workplace planning requirements in today’s economy. In addition, SydneyTalent increases the speed at which a student can contribute meaningfully in their job placement. We do this because we have a strong focus on soft skills and the importance of career readiness for all of our student employees. To support this we use the SydneyTalent Learning and Development program to provide a quality baseline, which our customers can rely on.
What do you enjoy best in your job?
I enjoy working closely with our clients who are prepared to challenge the status quo and employ incredibly talented and dynamic students. I am also excited to be part of an organisation that is committed right through the student experience and forging alternate career pathways for incoming generations.
What are the key issues businesses are mindful of in today’s market?
It was amazing to see the resilience of the employment market through the recent GFC and the foresight that CEOs and business leaders across the country showed in retaining talent through a wide variety of flexible work arrangements and programs. This new dynamic and flexible theme is the perfect climate for the SydneyTalent model of engaging pre-graduate students. Businesses are now looking for workforce flexibility and planning, to ensure their talent mix is right earlier, and more so to avoid reactive and crisis recruitment.
What is a new employee looking for?
Student employees are looking for opportunities to meaningfully contribute to a business by using their skills, knowledge and training. There are a lot of enthusiastic, passionate, loyal students out there who know exactly where they want to be by the end of their course and are willing to commit to their career development. My experience with our talent base is that they are incredibly considered about the decisions they make and are demonstrably loyal to those organisations that show commitment in them.
